Water softener - advantages and disadvantages, is it worth it?

Water softener - how does it work?

Water softener is a device which, as the name suggests, serves to reduce hardness, i.e., scale. Unfortunately, most households have access to water of higher hardness, i.e., high content of magnesium and calcium.

These systems are installed at the main water supply and contain an ion exchange bed. It exchanges magnesium and calcium ions for sodium ions. The device uses sodium chloride (salt) to regenerate the bed. A domestic water softener without salt is not able to function properly, because an unregenerated bed will cease to be effective, and thus will pass hard water.

Water softener - advantages and disadvantages

Water softeners do not have many disadvantages. However, they require cyclic refilling of the salt container, and consume additional electricity. They are also not typical filtration stations; therefore, more extensive water treatment requires the purchase of additional filters.

And what are the advantages of a water softener? Opinions of experts and users unambiguously indicate improvement of water properties, thanks to which it is possible to reduce the use of detergents, as well as extend the life of household appliances (e.g., irons, fittings, cookers).

Is a water softener healthy? Water softener and health

The answer to this question is yes. However, it should be mentioned that people on a diet requiring sodium restriction should be careful - in their case salt used in bed regeneration will not be the best choice, but instead of it you can buy potassium chloride, or you can additionally install a reverse osmosis system, which will eliminate the problem in water for drinking purposes.

Water softener with carbon filter

Some more complicated devices have additional functions. Water softener with a carbon filter will also help to get rid of e.g., chlorine and various impurities. Moreover, activated carbon has a positive effect on the taste and smell of water. You can check our Carbon Softener

Water softener - which one to choose?

Devices of this type should be selected based on the needs of users of a particular facility, i.e., water consumption and its parameters, including leading hardness (but also others are important, preferably provide a complete result of a water sample test). Less efficient models may not meet the demand of, for example, a family of 6 or the load on the bed with very high hardness. Which water softener in a flat? Is it possible?

Flow water softener is installed at the main water intake in a building.  Flat dwellers, however, can take care of such a device at home, however we recommend choosing smaller models. Good softening effect distinguishes also reverse osmosis systems, of course then they apply only to water for drinking purposes, not the whole flat. For small flats we recommend this model Diuna Duo 7.
